The articles are the same, but the house they live in has had a proper renovation. I wanted to share what has changed, because every one of these changes was made with you, the reader, in mind. ## A much faster site Pages now open in about a second, even on a phone with a slow connection. Google's own speed test gives the site 99 out of 100 for mobile, and full marks for accessibility, best practices and search. Less waiting means more reading. ## Better on your phone - Videos now fill the whole width of the article, so they are the same size everywhere. - Tables are readable on small screens without zooming. - Links and buttons are easier to tap with a finger. - Text and buttons have clearer contrast, and the page structure is easier to follow for readers who use screen readers. ## Your privacy, your choice A site about questioning what we are told should also respect its readers. So: - Visitor statistics are only collected if you allow them in the cookie banner. If you choose "Private", nothing is collected. - YouTube and other embedded videos no longer load by themselves. They load only when you press the play button, so outside services don't see your visit unless you choose to watch. - Several unnecessary outside services have been switched off completely. - The [Privacy Policy](https://www.auricmedia.net/privacy-policy/) has been rewritten in plain English, so you can see exactly what happens when you visit. ## The archive now takes care of itself After more than twelve years, the internet around these articles has changed. Websites close, videos are removed and images vanish. Instead of leaving you with broken boxes and dead ends, the site now checks its sources regularly: - Images that no longer exist at their source are tidied away cleanly. - If a YouTube video has been removed, you will see a short note instead of an empty player. - When an outside website has disappeared, the link now leads to a saved copy in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, from as close to the article's date as possible. More than 800 links have been rescued this way. A few very old posts that were left with nothing but a missing video have been retired.
